My name is Bea, I write scripts and sometimes I perform them. I’m from the west country, I largely write comedy/comedy-drama and I once did a show about Cher. I bloody love Cher.

I won the inaugural Theatre503 Playwriting award for my play And Then Come The Nightjars – which also earned me a place as a 2016 Finalist for the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. My critically acclaimed one woman/no woman show Infinity Pool; A Modern Re-telling of Madame Bovary garnered a sell out run at Edinburgh Fringe and a Total Theatre Award nomination. I’m also a recipient of the JB Priestley Award from the Royal Literary Fund and recently won a UK Theatre Award for my adaptation of Little Mermaid.

My latest family show, an adaptation of Mary Norton’s The Borrowers developed with director Nik Partridge for Tobacco Factory Theatres, enjoyed a sell out run over Christmas 2018.

I am currently writing a large scale comedy for the National Theatre and am also under commission to English Touring Theatre and the Royal Court in collaboration with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

In addition to this I am developing a 1950s’ Sci-fi comedy musical – Wasp Woman: The Musical with composer Jack Drewry.

I’ve been a TV geek for as long as I remember. Growing up in rural Devon, television was my window out into a world beyond hedgerows and cow pats and so I grew up on a diet of everything from ‘Sesame Street’ to ‘Cracker’, ‘The Upper Hand’ to ‘Eurotrash’.

I currently have original comedy drama series under option with several production companies including Hartswood Films.

I was also recently selected to represent the west country in the Young Vic Theatre’s My England film project, a series of film shorts about English national identity written by 14 writers including Jack Thorne and Simon Stephens. My film Sir F. Mother Fucking Drake starring Fleabag’s Jenny Rainsford is due to be released in February 2019.

I was dramaturg for The Wardrobe Ensemble on their Fringe First and Stage Award winning show Education, Education, Education and am currently working with the company on their new show The Pelican Daughters. I have also dramaturged (is that a word?) for Scratchworks Theatre Company, playwright Lucy Bell of Documental Theatre, Tremolo theatre, the North Wall Arts Centre’s Emerging Writers programme and the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
